Although several folks seem to disagree, it's my understanding that regular Elmer's and Elmer's Wood Glue (yellow stuff) are both PVA glues. Elmer's school glue is too BUT it doesn't work as well in projects requiring PVA glue because of the alterations made to the formula for child use. Here is some more info
I have used regular Elmer's watered down as a substitute for regular Mod Podge (which is PVA) in a pinch. Worked fine. But both real Mod Podge and the homemade type can get "tacky" with lots of humidity. So depending on where the door is you might want a sealer. Good luck with your project.
