How do I paint my oak bathroom cabinet with confidence?

I've read MANY articles on painting cabinets, and I'm so confused. Some say sand lightly, others say sand completely - use primer, don't use primer - use chalk paint, milk paint, self leveling paint - brush on, roll on, spray on - use foam, use good brush - use poly for final cost, don't use poly. Like many others, I'm scared to death to even begin, let alone know how to!!. I want the finish to look good, not DIYd , and I want it to last, not chip. So... How do I decide with confidence how to start this project and end up with something I'll be proud of?!

How to Paint Cabinets
Make sure they are clean and dry. Remove the doors and hardware. Mark the doors and cabinets with tape where they go. Lightly sand the doors and cabinets to remove any gloss and roughen the surface for paint with 200 grit sandpaper or a green Scotch Brite pad.. Use a tack cloth or damp rag to remove dust after sanding. Prime with a stain blocking primer like KILZ. Acrylic or water base paints are low-fume and clean up easily with water. Alkyd or oil-based paints require good ventilation because the paint contains solvents that can irritate your lungs and make you feel sick. Alkyd options require mineral spirits for cleanup, but they provide a hard, durable paint finish. Whichever you use, buy the best-quality paint you can afford for a lasting kitchen cabinet finish. Seal with at least three coats with a water based polyurethane. Use a small foam roller and foam brush for a smooth finish.
Linda,. Start with washing your cabinet with Murphy's oil soap, it's basically for wood, dry completely. Next take off the hardware, and paint the cabinet lying flat,. This will avoid streaking, and peeling. You can roll the paint on, if there are no cut ins. This you need to do with a brush. Use enamel high gloss, this will keep the moisture off the cabinet. If you have a window open it slightly at the top, or use an exhaust fan. Use 2 coats and dry completely between coats. After everything is dry, you can spray paint the hardware. If you need new hardware for just the cabinet, buy new. Aloha!
