How do I tile my kitchen floors over an existing one?

  • Technically you don't. You take up the old flooring first, inspect and repair the sub floor first, then tile the kitchen floor.

Best answer is, you don't. Depending on the floor you have now, there are different ways to remove it. Unless you are using stick on tiles - which are meant to stick on an existing linoleum floor, you should remove the existing floor, fix all the bumps and holes to smooth the surface and make it level, then tile. If that is not an option - then go with a material that is more forgiving then a ceramic or stone type tile.

    Hadja,

Tile is very heavy and installing it over your existing floor, whatever it is, requires a lot of preparation and may require another layer as a backer before tiling. As Jan and Naomie suggested, the best way to do this is to remove what you have now.
