How do I choose the right color for my project?

I recently moved into my home and was trying to use existing decorations. It's not working I'm thinking about building a countertop cabinet, frame the mirror and paint the vanity cabinets. Maybe even install adhesive woodlike laminate flooring. Also, moving linen cabinet to closet. Didn't realize there was no linen/storage in master suite. My dilemma is what color ?? Any suggestions??

First, do mot use laminate in a bathroom, will not hold up, does not like moisture. Your ideas sound good. Choose colors from your master bedroom, bedspread. Make part of the suite.

Maybe your husband could do two more projects at his parents' house -- change the lock and throw our anything that doesn't belong to them. Tough love! Sometimes you gotta do it.

    Mrs. Drift,

The best way to select a color is to find one that works with the things that you have. So I would collect the items you want in this room and see what color ties all of your things together. Use that color as the "main" color. Then use the following formula for the rest of the colors:

Main color = the color used in 60% of the room

Complementary color = the "trim" color that is used in 30% of the room

Accent color = the paint used sparingly for interest/contrast

NOTE: Most paint chip brochures that you can get at the paint dept. of your home improvement store will show complementary color groupings just for this purpose. Just use the 60/30/10 breakdown for best results.

Thank you for your comments and suggestions.

So, my master suite is sky blue/navy/gray. I have navy blue accents for the master bath but, the walls are a mauve like color and the wall and shower tiles are off white with mauve. I hung curtains from ceiling to floor on a curve shower rod. They are white with light/dark brown and light blue lines. ( these are fine.)

Question: Should I leave the vanity cabinets cherry/brown or paint them (white, light/dark gray? It seems like I have two many colors. I will change the main floor tiles accordingly.

Now for color scheme. Never use the bedding and curtains as a baseline for this because tastes change and we get tired of it or find something else we happen to love and then it's like starting all over again. What color flooring are you wanting to go with? If you were to change out the sink, what color would you go with? If you're going with a darker floor, I'd suggest a lighter color for the cabinets and darker sink/counter for contrast or vice versa. If you like the blues and greys, start there. You could do grey with navy trim/accents on the doors even for depth, and whatever you chose to frame the mirror if it has ridges/grooves you could accentuate it with this contrast, or even use the grey as the base with blue accents. If navy is the accent color you have for various things in the bathroom, itll help tie it together. Maybe a lighter grey on the walls? If you have a lot of lighting in the bathroom you could even get away with a med brown to tie in the shower curtain, but much like the bedding this taste can change. If you want to tie it in for now and go with the grey cabinets with navy trim you could even do navy walls and hang wicker/woven baskets for extra storage to tie it all in together, then maybe add a wallpaper boarder near the ceiling for that fun pop of color or buy crown molding. There are many options for wallpaper boarders now, my personal fav is the adhesive kind because it sticks well and is easy to remove when I redecorate so no one of that glue nightmare I watched my mother do in her livingroom lol. The humidity could cause issues if you have a textured wall, small strips here and there of carpet tape work miracles for this and won't peel off the paint . I've moved and rented a lot, grew up and married into military (divorced now thankfully) but with all the renters rules and base housing rules I had to get creative to make it home, especially the nurseries lol. Any questions plz feel free to contact me!

So, in looking at your pictures I see basically no color. If the walls are mauve, I think they aren't doing you any favors for the decorating. I would probably use a color pulled from your curtains for a wall color. The cabinets should be contrasting. My initial thought is a chocolate brown.

Also, I agree with Kelli. Neither laminate nor adhesive vinyl tiles should be used in a bathroom. They are not waterproof.

The idea with the colors is to take a neutral, such as brown, and make some components lighter and others darker. This provides continuity and a canvas to display your navy blue decor items while still creating depth.

Hi ! Change the mauve !!! I like light colors in the bathroom , you could paint it beige , with one wall navy , or sky blue ...but I think navy and beige is a nice combination.I have foot issues and have a hard time standing on file . We used a textured wood look vinyl planks food that was peel and stick , we have not had any problem with using them in the bathroom !!! Good luck !

The paint colour is the easy part, getting rid of your countertop clutter and open shelving is a different matter.Anything in open shelving must be ruthlessly colour co-ordinated which is not realistic if one actually needs storage for toothpaste and shampoo. The contrasting navy swag and bathmat makes everything look dated as do too many decor elements. Be ruthless.😛

Since there is an open space under the drawer, you might be able to find a base kitchen cabinet that would fit into the space. That would get rid of some of the clutter.

Light grey for the walls and a medium grey for the cabinets. Definately find some cabinets for storage or at least baskets

Just to add to previous comments...your main color scheme should be based on the biggest items you cannot change (fixtures, appliances, etc).

I would say that with color do you prefer vivid, rich jewel tones or soft pastels, or neutrals(warm or cool) it is suppose to be your happy place.

Thank you everyone for you suggestions. I like the vinyl plank flooring. Thinking about light/dark grey mix. Painting the vanity cabinets a contras grey and paint the walls a light gray or silverish blue.

I'm keeping the countertop for now.

Starting next week....will post as I gooooo...
