How should I paint my stairs?

I removed the carpet from my stairs. I have sanded and filled holes. My big concern is these big gaps. What do I do? If I caulk them that's a lot of caulk. Do I caulk before or after painting? Thanks

I would use quarter or half round trim.

    You need to add trim.

I agree with the other ladies. Definitely quarter round trim. The gaps are way to large to fill. Been there tried that. The caulking with for ever sink into the gap while drying as though it were a never ending hole to nowhere. There are methods to fill the gap, but it’s a frustrating very lengthy process and will never look as nice as trim.

Builders grade construction lumber. That's how builders do stairs if they are being carpeted. Add boards or trim to cover the gaps.
