Are there creative options to replace an ugly flourescent light fixture which is housed in a beautiful wooden light box? It sits over a kitchen island. Thought of pendant lights but how could that be accomplished?

Check to see what size hole is under the fixture. It may be small enough for a pendent light to cover the hole. If it is too big, perhaps you can run a nicely stained or painted board across where you plan on putting the pendent lights to cover the hole and to secure the lights.

You may have some discoloration under the fixture when you remove it. Ceiling may need to be re-painted. The current fixture is connected to an electrical junction box and any new fixture can be connected there. Adding more fixtures may be possible depending on which way the ceiling joists run and if you have a clear run for more wire. It may be possible to add track lighting (with LED bulbs) directly on the ceiling.

Just replace it. Turn the electric off first.

  • Choose a pendant light that you like. If the hole is too big, buy or make a ceiling medallion to cover the hole. Hire a licensed electrician to install for you. Easy, simple and quick.
