You need to amend the soil with topsoil, peat moss, and compost. Dig it in or rototill it in.

  • First use a soil test kit to see what it is lacking. Available at nurseries or home improvement centers or hardware stores. Depending on the results, head over to a better or reputable nursery to purchase the amendments that need to be mixed and tilled into your current soil. I refresh the beds before planting spring and fall. Makes a huge difference on how well the plants grow and produce. You can't go wrong with good compost. I buy in bulk and have delivered every spring.
