How do I put a gasket on my canister set?

This is a stupid question, but I have had this canister set for 40 years, back when they had S&H green stamps. Is there any way I could add a gasket or seal around the rim to keep flour and sugar fresh? I could buy a new set, but I never found any that I like. I only keep the flour or sugar for a short time in these, then if I haven't used it, I throw it out. Kind of a waste.

You can get canister seal replacement rings online through Amazon. Your local hardware store (like Ace) may also have them but stock varies widely in a hardware store so they may not have the exact size.

If you can't find gasket rings to fit, you could try putting silicone on the cover, press it onto the lip of the container to get the shape you need, take it off and let the top sit on its back until the proper setting time listed on the tube. Make sure whatever you use will stay flexible and not harden. I would use marine silicone myself, I know that stays flexible and may help your canisters stay more air tight. I hope this helps you, Judy!

Your welcome Judy! I hope you can find gaskets that fit, but the silicone should be a good substitute. Just make sure it fully sets before putting the lid back on or you will have a problem opening it.

If the canister seals are more then a $1. Try the $1 store for a container the size of yours and remove the gasket in warm water and put it on your lid.

    Re-purpose the container.

    Good luck

I love my canisters and many jars with the wire piece to lock the lids on. I could not find replacements and had many different sizes. I used foam sheets ( the same size as felt), to make new rings. It ended up taking 2 thicknesses to seal right.

LOL... Then I had about 30 circles of foam left the perfect size for coasters...

    Good luck ! 🌻

try putting a layer of hot glue either on the rim of top or around the neck of the canister...level it with a craft stick

There must be a place on line that sells rubber gaskets. You might try using self adhesive cork wall covering to make a gasket.

IF THE LID HAS A DOWN TURN THAT FITS INTTO THE JAR. USE A LARGE ELASTIC BAND OR TWO ON IT.
