How to redo kitchen walls that are plaster with paneling overtop?

We need to renovate our kitchen, it's an older home. The walls are plaster and when we moved in it had paneling over the plastered walls. We painted the paneling and it looks okay but we are considering taking off the paneling and putting up drywall. Is this a smart move? Should we repaint the walls(it could use it)?

I would remove the paneling. Check out the plaster and see if there was much damage to the walls when they put up the paneling. If this is the old time plaster, remember that this was an art and they do not do it anymore. Also, tearing this out can be a job if it is the kind of plaster done like cement. But, it depends on how bad you want a change. My thing is that when I get an idea it is Katy- bar -the door and I do it. Good Luck

Anxious to see replies as we have the same issue at our house. Our paneling was put up in the 70's--plastic coating over mason board--echhh! We are going to remove as I think it's glue has dried out and see what condition the plaster is in. If ok we plan to skim coat it as I like the rough plaster look(it's a dining room) and maybe if we have to put up drywall to aid in insulation on the outside walls. Not looking forward to the mess! Good luck and God Bless you!

I’d remove the paneling anticipating that the plaster may be in rough shape. From there you can decide whether plaster repair, drywall over it, or gutting it is the best way to go.

I would definately remove the sheet paneling and repair or drywall. Sheet paneling always look cheap.

Could not get rid of bold type, sorry.Either way. If there is plaster under, remove the paneling and do repairs. There might have been a reason that the paneling was placed to cover up something up that you need to know. Advice with adding drywall on top of plaster, your trim will not look right unless you fir out the trim! Tearing out old plaster and placing drywall perhaps may take the same amount of time as adding firring strips to trim. Ir you don't like paneling, rip it out!

Painting the paneling was a lot of work and it looked good, but that only looks good for so long. My husband is wary of what's behind the paneling, but I'm leaning towards removing and putting up drywall. I guess we'll see what happens! Thanks for everybody's response!
