Hang up this colorful fabric "Love" banner on Valentine's Day, or any day of the year, to celebrate the love that surrounds you, or give it to a far-off loved one to remind them that you care!

I just love bunting banners to add a nice bit of color and joy to a party or home. And by adding appliqué letters, you can customize them in infinite ways. I sewed this Love banner for a friend who had suffered multiple miscarriages and needed a reminder of the love in her life. However it is also perfect as a Valentine's Day decoration!

Start off by drafting a bunting flag shape. I used my "Celebrate! Banner pattern, but you can easily draft up your own. You'll need some scrap fabric for the flags, contast scraps for the letters and hearts and Heat'n'Bond Lite for attaching the appliqué letters. You will also need some double fold bias tape. You can use storebought or you can make your own with a bias tape maker.

Cut 12 bunting flag shapes for 6 flags total, front and back. (#1 above)

Draw mirror images of the letters l-o-v-e and two hearts onto the paper side of the Heat'n'Bond Lite. These letters and shapes are all ready in the Celebrate! Banner pattern, but you can just as well just freehand draw them or create the letters in a Word document and trace them from the computer screen. Just remember that they need to be mirror images. Then iron the shapes to the wrong side of the contrast appliqué fabric. (#2 above)

Make your bias tape, or buy some at a shop. (#3 above) You can find out how to make your own bias tape on my blog.

Cut the hearts and letters out along the lines, remove the paper backing, and iron them to the fronts of the flags. Then sew around the edges of the shapes with a zigzag stitch.

Put one flag backing on top of one appliquéd flag front, right sides facing, and pin around the sides. (#1 above) Sew around the sides, but not the top, then cut notches around the curves. (#2 above) Turn the flag right side out and iron flat (#3 above), then sew around the edges (#4 above).

Fold the bias tape in half to find the center and mark it with a pin. Stick the two center flags inside the bias tape on either side of that pin (shown above with the arrow), and pin them in place.

Continue pinning the other bunting flags in place, then sew from one end of the bias tape to the other.

Now all that's left to do is hang it up and think of the loved ones in your life!
