Hi Sandy I was just looking into replacing my windows, but they are so very expensive. Can't wait to see the answers.

  • Windows are expensive. And no matter how good the window may be, if they are improperly installed, they are almost worthless. I am on year 3 of 4 for replacing the windows in my house. I picked a brand and order from the same place. They install for me. If styles change slightly, no one will ever know unless they look closely. I am basically doing one side of the house each year. Think twice about installing yourself unless you know what you are doing.

If you mean double pane windows, yes they do make a difference. Most of your heat loss is going up (good attic insulation helps a lot). But windows could lose a good amount too. Between the two panes of glass is argon gas. They do save you money on energy bills. I know they can be expensive, but if you do maybe one side of your house every year, in 4 years you'll have all new windows. Make sure they insulate around the window with bat insulation (spray foam insulation can void some window companies warranty). Sometimes replacing your doors can help, too. If old or not installed properly, they can be the cause of heat loss. That could be year 5. Good luck.

The big difference is the comfort level. We just replaced 3 in a bedroom. My husband and I are very skilled and have remodeled and built quite a few additions. Our farmhouse is an 1880's build and even though we purchased new windows that were the same size, the frame of windows was different so we had to box in the opening. Then we had to caulk and trim them out. It is a 2 person job. We were able to purchase them $80 each at a discount supply store compared to $250 each at Home Depot. Now that we have them in it is amazing how much warmer the room is now. We are still working on the room but it is well worth it to me for the comfort.

Yes, it can make a considerable difference in the comfort of your home and likely will decrease your heating charges over time.
