How do I update kitchen counters?

How do I update this counter top? I would like to keep the black trim but cover the green part with a durable, smooth surface, (no grout lines). I am on a tight budget.

Thank you so much for the advice! That’s one good thing about the tile, it’s very durable, I just hate the grout, so hard to keep clean.

Is that my old counter?? :) Until you have a good idea what you want (and $$), it may be possible to get a large chunk of butcherblock (IKEA?) or premade counter surface and place it over the tile for your work are - even have it trimmed to fit neatly within the black tile you like. your tile looks in great shape. and definitely adds character!

It is a very old counter, I believe it’s the original one. It’s very durable, it’s just a task keeping the grout clean.

But Rustoleum will leave the grout lines. It just lets you paint the tiles and grout white. If you want to keep the black tiles edge, but have a smooth surface in the middle then epoxy resin might work. People have used that to create new counter tops. They painted the surface with unicorn spit and then poured a layer of resin over it. Do some research on that to get some ideas - especially since you probably want to cover the green tiles in the middle? You could maybe use a plain white resin which would create a smooth white surface and take care of the grout also in one sweep. Or you could get totally creative and embed a bunch of fun things on the tile surface and cover everything with clear epoxy. (I saw someone cover a counter completely with pennies and then clear epoxy.)

This one has a bunch of different examples of what people did with their counters and table tops.

Thank you so much! That’s more along the lines of what I am looking to do! Any idea of how it would be with heat resistance?
