How can we remove a chimney safely?
Our home is a little over a hundred years old. The kitchen has an unused and useless protruding chimney. It has been covered up many times during those 100+ years.
Can it be removed, safely, without destroying the structure of the house. I measured the inside as approximately : 9" deep & 17 1/2" wide.
There are 3 original chimneys and 1 added on chimney. (when a utility room was added for a huge, hot-water boiler system in early 70's).

Contact a mason and see if it can be removed. Most of the time they need to be removed from the roof down. Just the weight can cause it to collapse and cause a lot of structural damage.
Yes you can, but you need a plan as to what or how you will close up the space once it is removed. Best left to the pros as 100+ years ago, construction was much different than today and you would not want to damage the main structure itself.

Do NOT take the advice of ANYONE but a LICENSED CONTRACTOR!!!! I live in a 112 year old house and was told a wall was NOT a retaining wall and it was!! PLEASE, please do not listen to anyone but a licensed contractor. Some might not even charge you for their opinion. Good luck.
