After returning from a 3 week vacation the toilets in both bathrooms have hard to remove water rings. Is there some way to avoid that?

Not really. The ring forms as water evaporates from the toilet. If you would be gone for an extended time period turn off the water to the toilet., and empty the water out. The shut off valve should be on the plumbing under the tank.

When we leave we put a thick coat of white vim and leave it on till we come home. Just wash with the toilet brush when you come home....and no terrible rings.

Vim is a cleaner in liquid bottle you just squeeze it in your bowl. It's like liquid comet. They have yellow lemon, white with bleach and then they have plain white.
