Easy DIY Farmhouse Crate

If you're looking for a beginner wood working project that involves minimal supplies, this is for you! I used scrap wood and materials to create a farmhouse style crate in a few hours. No fancy skills required for this one either. Check out the blog for more ideas on simple builds!

This is a project that came about originally because I was looking for a solution to keep all our remote controls handy in the living room. Since then it's become more for decoration, but you can use it for anything! Paint it, stain it, or leave it natural to match whatever decor you like.

You need minimal supplies for this one:

  • scrap wood (I used leftover plywood and scrap 1/4s)
  • hardware - hit up a vintage store for some inexpensive choices
  • nails/screws/wood glue
  • paint or stain
  • saw
  • screwdriver/drill

Make your cuts based on the size you want. You'll need to cut the 1x4 for the sides of the crate and then cut the plywood for the bottom and ends of the crate. Here's what I ended up with:

  • 15&3/8" for the sides and bottom
  • 7&3/8" for the ends

Attach your sides to the bottom using wood glue or nails/screws. Whatever works! I ended up using nails and it's held up for years!

When you get it all together, you'll have a neat little rectangle that you can paint or stain whatever color you like. Then drill holes if necessary for the hardware on each end and attach.

Even if you don't have any scrap wood lying around, you can grab the supplies for this project for around $10-15 at the hardware store. Always check the back of the stores for scrap wood they may have for cheap! A tiny can of stain is around $3 and if you don't have a saw, get them to cut the wood for you at the store!
