What's Your Personal Design Style?

There are a million and one “What’s your design style?” quizzes out there, and even though those are super fun (and bring me back to my Seventeen magazine quiz days lol), how can you be sure if it really nailed your personal style?

Am I a boho fanatic? Modern farmhouse-loving gal? Industrial chic city girl? Decorating styles have changed so much over the years and fortunately for us, you don’t have to narrow it down to just one design style- crossover is more than welcome! I have a few simple tricks that will help you weed through all those design styles to find the one that will spark joy and help you eliminate the ones that just aren’t working for you (We’re basically Marie Kondo-ing these styles!) Knowing your decorating style will help you confidently develop a plan to create a home you love. Grab a notebook, jot down your thoughts and you’ll be on your way!

Get in Touch with Your Feelings

TBH I’m not much of the touchy feely type, but this step really does help! Take a minute to think about how you want your home to feel and then write those feelings down. When you walk in after a long day of work, do you want your space to be calm and cozy? Bright and energizing? Luxe and sophisticated? Think about your favorite place in the world- is it a light and airy cottage in California? A cozy cabin in New England? A chic, industrial loft in New York City?

Identifying how each of those spaces makes you feel can be a great place to start evaluating your style. If you love a relaxed vibe filled with neutral colors and lots of cozy textiles, then a modern luxe design with bright jewel tones, animal prints and shiny metallic elements is not going to be right for you!

Take a Peek in Your Closet

Believe it or not, what you put on your body says a lot about your decorating preferences! First up, what patterns are you drawn to? Animal print, plaid, polka dot, stripes, florals? Traditionally, stripes and plaids are classic patterns that work well in both the modern farmhouse and coastal cottage styles, as well as transitional style. Florals and animal prints work especially well in a modern luxe or Hollywood glam space. Next up- consider your colors! Is your closet full of tans, blues, creams and grays? Or do you love bold colors like ruby reds, rich purples, emerald greens? Take note of the many shades of colors and write the top three that keep repeating over and over again. They’re trying to tell you something!

Weekend Vibes

Finally, everyone loves the weekend, but our Saturday plans usually look very different from one person to the next. Answer this question for me: “What would your perfect Saturday look like?” Do you love a casual, laid back brunch or a glamorous evening cocktail party? Hanging out with the fam, accomplishing projects around the house? Sleeping in, in your cozy bed? Or hitting the trails for a 5 mile run? How you prefer spending your time indicates how and when you feel most yourself. If you’re all about lounging around in sweats 90% of the time, a formal sophisticated space probably isn’t going to be your jam, but if you love getting dolled up in a fun cocktail dress for a night on the town (and you do this more often than not), then a dressed up space infused with fun colors and finishes might be just up your alley!

Ok, so now what?

Now that you’ve spent some time evaluating the things that make you uniquely you, you can start to eliminate the design styles that just aren’t for you. Zeroing in on your preferences will help narrow down your choices- the perfect place to start for great design is knowing YOURSELF!
