To be honest, you don't have to have unless you have a gas stove. If you cook a ton of spicy food, open a window is my advice

I'd find some way to get a hood vent. The amount of grease and cooking odors you'll get from having no vent year round will mean hours out of your life for heavy duty cleaning.

    Carol,

You can put in an overhead vent, but it will take some work. I installed one in my old house. I bought a Broan that is designed to be installed inside a cabinet. They come in different sizes and colors. You cut out the bottom of the cabinet, rearrange the shelves, and vent it out the side of the house if your stove is against an outside wall or through the ceiling and then the roof. You will also need to run wire for power. I used an existing switch near the stove.
