Don't use tap or well water to water them. Use rain water if you can get a steady supply, or distilled water. You can try trimming off the browned (dead) ends, but be aware that once the tips die off, trimming off the dead part of the leaf will still create a narrow band of what I consider "scar" tissue on the leaf - that is, you will still see a narrow brown band form over time at the end of the area where you cut the brown part off.

When you switch to using rain water or distilled water, consider either flushing out the existing soil in the current planter to wash out leftover mineral build-up from the water you were using before (use the rain water or distilled water for the flushing), or transplant into new potting soil.

  • Plants should not be standing in a saucer of water and they need high enough humidity to avoid leaf tip burn. Overwatering is a cause of spider plant leaves turning black or dark brown. The soil should dry out slightly between irrigations.

it's the tap water, get a jug (milk), fill it with water, let it sit for about a week, then use the water to water your plants, fill jug again, let sit, this will get rid of the chemicals in the water. This way you will always have water to use for your plants. You can also cut the brown tips off with scissors. I worked at flower shops and plant nursery's we would always have 5 gallon buckets sitting around to water the plants.
