Be careful when cutting hydrangea back. Your answer depends upon the type of hydrangea due to growth and flower buds.
You need to know the type of hydrangea. Trimming at the wrong time damages next year's growth.
Hi Florence,
It depends on the type of hydrangea that you have. Some bloom on old wood and some bloom on new wood. If they bloom on old wood and you prune them away you may not have any flowers for at least this year. If they bloom on new wood, you can cut back the old wood as needed. The best time to prune hydrangeas is after they bloom for the season. Be careful when you cut them though if they bloom on old wood. Look at the branch to see if there are nodules that could be next year's flowers. This article might be of help to you. Wishing you the best and beautiful hydrageas!
