How can I resurface a tile top table?

I have a table with tiles on top and a rubber type grouting between them. I like table and size of it but the tiles make using the top of homework impossible. The Glass shop stated they would have to cut a certain type of safety glass to set on top. I can almost buy a new table for the glass cost. Any inexpensive suggestions to resurface my table to a smooth surface ?
Alice, obviously you need a solid surface.
And a fast and inexpensive solution is a large desk calendar that has cardboard on the back.
You can remove when needed.

AHHH...glass places are trying to sell you tempered glass. And YES THAT IS EXPENSIVE!! Is that totally necessary though? Tempered glass is put in on tables so that it is shatter proof. Usually that is when the glass sits on top. But this would be inset with framed wood around it. If you don't have any little kids running around, do you need shatterproof glass that is inset? You can just get a piece of glass at Home Depot or Lowes and cut it yourself. But I wouldn't use glass actually....I would use mirror and you can cut it yourself. It might take a little practice but its actually pretty easy with just the right tools. The reason I say mirror is because you won't see the adhesive on the back when you go to put this in the table in place of the tiles. SO FIRST TAKE OUT YOUR TILES!! Cut the mirror, and place it where the tiles are and caulk around it. Might bring a little sparkle to the room and then paint the table; bam..you have a furniture makeover! Here are the tools you will need: Glass cutter (can be bought at Home Depot) and running pliers!(Amazon) Score the glass and at the bottom edge break the sheet with running pliers at the score line. If that makes no sense, watch a tutorial on you tube 'how to cut sheet of glass". Sorry I don't have my own tutorial yet(but will). Anyway, I hope this helps. You could do a lot here actually but this is just one idea:)

Thank you. I have custody of my 6 yr old granddaughter who has ADHD. I'm afraid that the mirror won't work for us. I do like your idea and think I would love to do that if circumstances were different.

Contact paper probably won't hold up with your granddaughter and a mirror on a kitchen table sounds like a nightmare. Try the epoxy kit, they can be bought in big box stores. You don't have to use the kit from the website (I just think their videos are good).
You can use one of Spreadstones products or Ardex concrete feather finish. You can glue wood over it, a small sheet of plywood and then stain it. For the edges, just think of it as a drawer would look upside down. Would give it a different look.
How about a large piece of cardboard or even plexiglass ( buff the edges to make it smooth)?
Why this desk top is not suitable for 'homework' or writing tasks, is because the grouting lines are bumpy, and the edging of the table is higher than the centre. Contact paper will not be effective in eliminating the problem.
