Pinecone Flower Heart Decoration
You maybe thinking that this is the wrong time of year for a pinecone decoration. I know we normally associate pinecones with fall and Christmas. However, I think my pinecone decoration is so bright and vibrant it would look good up all year round and especially for Valentine's.
Every year I make a Valentine's decoration heart out of the stuff around me. Last year I used a coat hanger and an old sweater, (see it here). This year I decided to use pinecones. However, like with the sweater heart this one will probably stay up all year too!
What you need to make this gorgeous decoration is a shadow box frame, pinecones, acrylic paint and a good adhesive glue. I used Gorilla Glue clear adhesive.
The first thing I did was bleach my pinecones. This is optional, bleaching the pinecones doesn't make them white. But it does lighten them a few shades. Which helps with painting.
I left the pinecones to dry out fully.
Once the pinecones were dry, I cut the tops of them using secateurs. The pinecones end up looking like flowers.
Then using the acrylic paints I painted the pinecones a variety of pinks and reds.
Just mix the red and pink paints together to get different shades.
Paint the center of the pinecone flowers a different colour and add splashes around the edge.
I painted the shadow box frame pink.
I also painted a pink heart on the cardboard mount of the frame.
I added a blob of clear glue onto the base of the painted pinecone.
I then stuck the painted pinecones onto the painted heart. I used this painted heart as my guide.
Once all the pinecones are in place. Cover them with a book to weigh them down whilst the glue sets. This will take a couple of hours.

All that is left to do is to put the pinecone flower in the box frame. You can either hang it on the wall or it will sit nicely on a shelf or mantle.

That is a really pretty labor of love. Did you use only the top of the pine cone or, can you get more than one flower per cone? I paint and glitter whole cones for holiday gifts and decoration. I would like to try your flower project. And, thank you.
I saw dpbeee2 said you only use the tops of the pinecones. It looks to me like you trim the top off and use the bottom of the pinecone for the flower. Please advise. I love the project. Thank you. Cathy
