I poke a hole in the center with a large, long stick like a broom handle. Then I pour boiling water down the hole. Kills the ants and dissolves a portion of the bed. Then it's just a bit of mud to clean up.

You can try a mix of sugar with baking powder. They can't taste the powder and take it down and when they eat it it kills them. This is also a good thing to use for roaches. Good Luck

We had an acre full of red ant hills and the surrounding field was also full of them. We tried everything: poison, bait, everything. Nothing worked for long. They just moved the hills a few feet and came back just as bad. Then an old timer told us of a home remedy that safe for people and pets, inexpensive, and it WORKS. It works for ANY ant. Amdro Ant Bait just put a little down on trail (not mound) and they take it back to nest kills queen. It is poison I put something over it( flower pot ) so my dogs cats don't get in it it works in just a few hrs. If you put it directly on mound they get all wound up and don't always take it in mound. Sometimes they just move opening & you think they've gone but just moved doorway to mound for protection. Boric acid & corn meal mixed is basically same thing just DIY Amdro ant bait. Many people think if you put muffin mix, corn meal other items on mound they eat it and blow up die it's ridiculous they don't eat what they are carrying to nest, they eat what they have stored in nest & it doesn't kill them. They eat plant matter, organic matter, food waste so it doesn't kill them? you need to add the boric acid " ant workers cannot eat solid food! The only members of the ant family that digest solid food are the oldest larvae, who feed the rest of the colony in liquid form." myths Myth: Use Cinnamon, Garlic and Pepper to Control Ants

While it is true that ants do not like the smell of cinnamon, garlic and pepper, these common ingredients will not kill or completely repel the insects. The strong scent of these products only temporarily masks the pheromone trail that ants use to communicate and navigate. If you already have an infestation, these spices will not solve the problem. Myth: Boiling Water Gets Rid of AntsAlthough boiling water kills ants on contact, it only works as long as the liquid is hot. Boiling water only works on the ants that you see. It does not eliminate an infestation or stop a colony from moving indoors. You could also accidentally burn yourself.Myth: Oatmeal and Grits Kill AntsAdult ants do not eat solid food. Their larvae break the dry grains down first and then feed the liquid to the rest of the colony. As a result, they will not explode by absorbing water or dry out after eating oatmeal or grits as is commonly believed. Spreading grits and oatmeal just provides these insects with a source of food.Myth Vinegar and Baking Soda Kill Ants

Like so many other home remedies, vinegar and baking soda only temporarily mask the scent from a pheromone trail. They do not kills ants or eliminate an established colony. Vinegar doesn’t kill ants. It can remove the trace of ants to confuse ants about where to go to find the rest of their colony, but it won’t rid your home of ants.Myth: Draw a Chalk Line Across Your Doorway to Keep Ants OutAnts may turn around when they reach a chalk line because it temporarily disrupts the scent trail that they leave behind. Chalky feet may prevent ants from climbing. These effects are only temporary. You will have to keep drawing chalk lines around your house.
