How to update kitchen with minimum spending?

dark-brown cabinets, cream back-splash, cream counter tops (don't know how to upload pics to computer), white appliances. The latter is what seems to be "blaw, boring, and clashing". How to paint the appliances a different color? What type paint to buy. If I could paint the formica cabinets without losing the u-shaped pattern in-grained in the laminate, I'll be super happy, but...??? Thank you.

  • Appliance paint for the appliances, sold at any paint store. They also sell appliance "skins."

Yes you can paint formica cabinets. Upgrading the hardware will help too.

Make a new backsplash using paneling from a home improvement store. My local Lowes has a 4x8 sheet of white washed barnwood paneling for less then $40. For me one sheet will do the trick. I will cut it into 2 pieces and tack into place. Use some white washed half round to finish off edges. If you have two walls that meet in a L shape a small piece of quarter round (white washed) will finish it off.

Take one of the cabinet doors to the paint department of the home improvement store and ask them to select paint/stains and other finishes and application tools that will work for them.

Take photos of the appliances and countertops. They have the best selection, the most up-to-date materials and most important, the most informative sales staff to get you what you need for a professional job.

For a major facelift like this, there should be no charge for suggestions on materials, etc.

Some additional suggestions on your kitchen facelift, I always suggest that people cut out pictures or download them from the internet of "dream" rooms. Use these as inspiration for wall and trim colors, accessories like curtains and rugs, and appliances.

Change all the bulbs in your kitchen to LED light, which is clear, and casts minimal shadows. If your budget permits, change out the old light fixtures with new integrated LED light fixtures. This will instantly brighten and update any room without any requiring any construction or messy painting.
