How can I redo my dining & livingroom floor on a budget?

Our dining room and living room are connected. we have hard wood floors now but when we took out the wall inbetween the wood does not match up and have big gaps. I put plaster in the wholes and painted it the color of the floor but you can still tell. We have 2 small dogs so i worry about scratching the floor. But would like ideas on what to do. And we are on a budget. Lynell

My friend had that problem, at first she laid a cheap runner down but her dog running across kept moving it, so with painters tape she marked off a rectangular size where floors didn't match, taped off a design inside of the outside tape an painted it with colors to match her decor. It looks like a beautiful piece of art on the floor an resembles a runner rug between rooms
You could piece the area where you removed the wall and then sand the whole floor and re-stain. This would give you the look you want. Try to save a little over time for this project and you will always be happy with the finished results. In the meantime, add the boards you need to fill in the space.
Is there wood in a closet or other hidden spot you could take wood from to patch the area? I would try that or find similar wood to patch with.
Why don't you measure equal distances from the out side edge of your walls and make a border , maybe a Greek key design, paint that in ,then do the same across the damaged area and again across the room in another area where the symmetry would "look" right
I am a graphic designer and love the idea. I do paint. we live in a cold state so i have 2 area rugs one under the table and one in the living room. the rug covers most iit except for 3 feet x6 inches. I might have to cover the whole floor with something. thank you
