For a fool-proof color scheme:
-60% of your room should be your main color
-30% should be a complementary color
-10% should be an accent color that "pops" (hint: use curtains, a rug or other accessories as your guide to tie it all together)
If you want to update a backsplash, you can cover it inexpensively using removable wall paper or peel and stick tile. They make different sizes to go right over the existing backsplash.
