I would put something like a cutting board on it and call it a day. Burn holes in Formica are impossible to repair without replacing the Formica. You can cut out the area for an in counter cutting board, or just put one on top. Make sure that no one puts hot things on the Formica without adequate protection, pots, pans, ashtrays, etc. so that burns don't happen again. If it was from smoking mishaps, outlaw smoking in the house. We live in MN and even with the cold, no smoking is done in the house, and no one complains, it is just done that way and don't have to be told twice.

    Hi Diane,

Depending on where the area is and how large, I would tend toward replacing it with either the same pattern (if you have one) and being very careful in the future or adding in a cutting board or large trivet. Since the area suffered a burn from something either from cooking or smoking, there is a tendency to repeat the original cause of the burn, so replacing with something more practical in that area might work better for you. Best to you.
