Ugly ceiling

We have an ugly dropped panel ceiling in the living room. If we tear it out we would have to redo the walls and put in new rafters as there was fire damage in this room before we bought the house. I have actually rolled pain on this ceiling and the panels stayed in place but I Hate the looks of the sectioned ceiling. Any ideas of a quick and cheap fix???

Sometimes quick and cheap do not go together and in cases like yours, they never apply. From your description, this sounds like a major re-do of the room!

The only way to fix is to change it out. But in the meantime create focal points towards the floor so folks do not look at the ceiling. Keep lights focused on floor and not as bounce lights off the ceiling. Also depending upon the tile type you have will make a difference on how it looks. There are shadow type tiles, flat tiles, heavy textured tiles. You can always popcorn the entire ceiling and cover over the grid. It can make a bit of a mess doing this, but it will cover the grid pretty well for at least the short term.

If it was mine, I would paint the grid and get new revealed edge tiles (if current is 2 x 4 tiles, get the ones that make it look like they are 2 x 2) You can also paint them or buy them in a soft beige color that isn't as harsh until the redo is possible. The tiles are not cheap but you may not need that many for your space. I too find the acoustical suspended ceilings a bit cold for residential spaces but the 2 x 2 revealed edge tiles really make a difference..not the complete transformation you want but help. They also have systems to make acoustical ceilings look like coffered ceilings that are pretty amazing. check out the web for Armstrong coffered ceilings for ideas...and they sell plastic tiles you can drop in your grid that look like tin metal ceilings etc. Again - not cheap but amazing. I put plexi glass panels in mine and cut up a upward view of a tree mural to replace some of mine and created a faux skylight that creates a great focal point that makes the dreary tile ceiling disappear a little bit. Get creative I know you will find something that works for you!

Ceiling tiles have come a long way in the past few years. New colors and textures can actually make a place look classy!
