Every year I take a look at my screens and check for holes or deterioration. My local hardware store will re-screen the frames. If the holes are small, you can purchase a screen repair kit that comes with square pieces of screen about 2 inches wide. They are easy to apply to a screen while it is in the window, They will last quite a while.

Hi Rosemary, Brenda is right on with her answer(s). I was at my local hardware store getting some new keys made and they were redoing a person's screens. I didn't even know that was a service they provided. Just be careful in transporting the frame to them and they'll be able to get the screens back in service in no time!

If you can't afford to have your screens repaired right now you can go to a big home improvement store like Menards or Lowes and buy adjustable slide in screens that will allow you to have some air coming in but no bugs. They work the best in double hung windows. You can also order them online--Home Depot has them on their website.

  • Where I live you have 3 options.

    1. Go to any hardware store or home improvement center and buy the supplies and rescreen yourself. Watch You Tube to learn.

    2. Take to a service that will rescreen for you.

    3. Google for a mobile service. They come to your home and fix them for you.

There are screen repair kits also available that work using a hair dryer. Very economical and extremely easy to affix.

If your frames are bent and you can’t afford to buy new ones you can make screens yourself. First measure the width and length of your windows. You can purchase screening material at most hardware stores. Then buy inexpensive narrow tension rods (the width of your windows) at Walmart, Big Lots, etc., You can either hand or machine sew a

“casing” to fit the rod into and then a casing at the bottom of your screen to put smooth stones, bolts, glass gems, etc., to layer in and then sew each end. Push the rods inside your window opening. The screens shouldn’t blow with the wind if the bottom is heavy enough. You can make a longer version to allow air into a doorway as well.
