Start by sanding and conditioning the wood, then stain. After that's dry, put on two coats of polyurethane and your cabinets will look just as good as any professional could have done for you.

Before you stain the cabinets, it’s important to remove all the doors and drawers to make sanding and applying the stain easier.

Use 120 grit sandpaper to lightly sand the cabinets. Always sand in the direction of the wood grain.

For the second sanding, use 220 grit sandpaper.

After sanding, apply a wood conditioner.

Use a rag to work stain down into the pores of the wood.

Make a final pass working in the grain of the wood.

Use an oil-based polyurethane with an oil-based stain.

Great instructions from Mogie. You will need to sand down to raw wood. You can used water based stain and poly. Oil based poly has a yellow cast and does yellow over time.

You can stain over stain with gel stain. You can go darker but not lighter.

I would recommend gel staining for Kitchen Cabinets. You do not have to sand them down to use gel stain.

Gel stain can be applied over an existing finish. :) If it is a slick finish you might need 3 to 4 coats of gel stain.

Gel stain is great for restaining wood! Though if there are any scuffs in the wood finish prior, then you'll still see those blemishes.

it depends on what finish is on your cabinets already. if they are painted or already stained, you will have to remove that in order to apply a new coat/color of stain.
