I did that! Well, in a way. I just brushed off the brick. I used a regular latex paint in an off white color. I did not water the paint down. I used a large brush to rub the paint into the rough areas of the brick. (It is not extremely rough brick) As soon as I painted a small area, I scrubbed the paint back off with an old thick terry cloth towel. This left all the details in the brick showing so it doesn't look painted!
This took the fireplace from a horrible orangey pink to a soft white and even the morter looks original.
It went very fast, about 5 hours. And I am very pleased!
