My dinning room table is oval and I would love to turn it into a farm house table. Any ideas?

    Maybe with some chalk paint?

Hello Kim! Did you want to change the oval shape of your table? If so--then you could make a farmhouse style top that would fit over the top of your table to give it a new look. Here's some tabletop ideas from Pinterest to give you an idea of what you could do: https://www.pinterest.com/pin/200128777162253950/?lp=true

Without a photo, I can't tell for sure, but suspect this is very doable. Is there an apron? Is it rectangular or oval? Can the existing top be removed? Or are you better off building it over the existing top.

I envision making a rectangular top that fits over the oval. How best to do this depends on the answers to my previous questions.

I will be happy to provide a couple concepts and pro and cons. Should you want to proceed we will then get into specific details.

I have done a number of farm tables and have attached the photo of one. Two others can be found on HomeTalk by searching for "A Tale of Two Tables".

Paint the supports/legs and finis the top in a pretty wood finish. You can build a new top to rest over the existing if you don't think the current shape will work.

I really don't want to add a top. The table is oval with an apron. Will it look ridiculous painted like a farm table?

I think the easiest way is to use a dark stain on top (first sand and or use a liquid sander) and paint the bottom with white chalk paint. Shabby the legs with a little sandpaper and seal it all in a polycyclic instead of polyurethane. Another cute look is to stain the top med to dark and paint the legs black. The white one is obviously in my house but I’m going to turn my older golden oak set to the first look for my breakfast nook.

  • I agree with everyone above about keeping the top wood, and painting the base and legs. Some pretty farmhouse style colors right options right now are black, white, grey, and duck egg blue. After you paint, give them a little distress with sandpaper to “age” them.
