How do I paint mason jars?

I want to paint some mason jars for my bathroom to use as toothbrushes holders, a cotton ball container and one for Q-tips but every time i paint them with chalk paint it comes off when they get wet. I've tried applying mod podge first then chalk paint, baked them in the oven at 170° for 30 mins then they come out with the paint cracked. I'm at my wits end. Plus i don't know what to use for the toothbrush holder to make the slots for them to stand up. Help !!!

Hi Debbie, since you are using it where it can get wet I would use spray polyurethane to seal it after painting. I know that you are probably going for the chalk look but it will not hold up well to water unless sealed. You could use a light weight wire or some wax coated hemp twine for the slots.
Just a thought that came to mind...Sanding the area underneath with a fine-ish grit (600) wet & dry sandpaper (Auto sand paper - not wood/cabinet paper) sand paper might help the paint's "stickability" The glass is too smooth, so the paint will not adhere to it.
I would try a multi-surface spray paint.

You can paint them with almost any paint. The trick is the proper prep. Make sure they are free of any grease or oil and then prime them with a really good adhesion primer like Kilz or BIN Shellac based primer. After the primer is dry you can paint with latex, chalk paint, acrylic paint.
Then you'll want to seal the paint with a clear coat (or 3 coats) to prevent the water from ruining the paint. I really like varathane poly.
