the type of paint used is determined by what the door is made of wood, aluminum, plastic compound. you need to use a paint for wood, if the storm door is wood etc. you will want a clean surface for the primer/paint. the primer can be tinted brown. when the primer is dry, 2 coats of paint usually suffices. if you use latex paint or oil based paint, you don't need to "seal" the paint- that is more for the milk and chalk paints.

choose a shade of brown that you like, and a brush that is the same width as the door parts. even if that paint was shaken at the store, you will still need to stir it up.

dip your paint brush into the can so the lower half of the brush is covered in paint. wipe part of it off so there are no drips, and pick a place to start painting. I usually start at the top and work down. if there is glass or screens in place- take painters tape to the edges in case paint might get dripped on it. do one side of the door at a time, make sure it is completely dry before doing the other side.

lightly sand primer and paint. Some paints contain primer so one less step. Ask at the paint store counter which paint is best for use.

We use Benjamin Moore paint because it covers so evenly and usually does not require a great deal of extra coats. Good luck to you on your project!

Just a note. I have used the primer and paint mix on a deck and it blistered within a couple of months so I would advise that you do it in two steps, prime then paint. As a result, I am definitely not in favor of cutting corners when you paint. You will get a far more lasting and professional finish. A good cleaner and paint preparation is to wipe down the door with pure vinegar, if it is metal, and then apply your paint.
