How to paint a fireplace?

I have a brick fireplace that I want to paint and I want to change the mantle and cover how do I go about doing that? I don't have too many skills.

I white washed my Z-brick fireplace wall but you can also just paint it with latex paint. Here's what I did.

Hope this helps Sue. You should be able to simply remove the old mantle and replace it with a new one that you like better. Just measure carefully.Good Luck!
