Re-finish usually means stripping it, re-staining and then re-polyurethane clear coat.

I’d buy gel stripper, and buy long rubber gloves, drop cloths and work in a well-ventilated area- like a heated garage. Cotton rags, small scrapers, old toothbrushes and wear old clothes & shoes.
We’re talking about chemicals that melt paint & some plastics.
After it’s stripped, then clean it with denatured alcohol and the rags. Let it dry and see how it looks in the morning.
Lightly sand it, wipe clean, put sanding sealer on it, let dry.
I Paint stain on & wipe it off with cotton rags. You’ll find that the stiles & rails take the stain differently from the panels. That’s why sanding sealer is worth the $.
The next morning, I touch up the stain with a Q-tip, if I’m not happy with it. Let dry.
Polyurethane with a fine bristle brush.Two full coats. If you sand between coats, use very fine sand paper & wipe very clean.
When shopping, stick with one base: water based or oil based for all three finishes.
Take a good photo of the door to the paint department of your local home improvement store and ask for their opinion. They sell so many products and have the know-how so that they should be able to give you a game plan for success.
