You can refinish or paint?
Sanding it down and adding new stain and varnish is one option. You can also paint, there are so many awesome colours available now.
You could add stencils to the top. https://www.cuttingedgestencils.com/blog/give-your-kitchen-table-a-facelift-with-stencils.html
I do not know if I am permitted to use brand names, but at a local paint store I recently attended a workshop using products from General Finishes -- you will see the samples I painted below. I was amazed at the results -- you can easily add finishes such as barnwood, There are how-to videos of their website, if you cannot attend a training. I am no artist, but these products could be used successfully by anyone. My daughter and I will be using one of the effects on her tired dining table as soon as the weather gets a bit warmer up here north of Boston because we like to open up the windows when we are painting. I am not affiliated with this company at all -- I just wanted to share how impressed I am with how easy it is to make an old piece of furniture look beautiful!
