How do I remove stains from vinyl?

Around the hand grips on the inside of my car door are dark stains from years of use. Is there a homemade formula that will penetrate and lift these stains?

Have you tried a mixture of white vinegar and water?
I would use some liquid dishsoap, warm water and a small hand scrub brush to scrub it off. You can also use a toothbrush for hard to reach areas.
