First I would start with a primer like kilz or even a rustoleum paint made for metal, then you can paint it as you would normally use chalk paint. I would recommend at least two coats for even coverage. Share pictures after! :)
Hi Imelda, you can check this out. https://www.thepurplepaintedlady.com/2016/05/8412/
Prep is always the key to painting "the shinier the finish the more sanding" you need to wire brush/ sand off any rust; then metal primer(spray if the surface is not smooth) then paint;if outdoors piece needs to be sealed with sealer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DnMTAh2c0e0 on line info.---So if you are chalk painting on a metal desk or on metal outdoor furniture I would water down the paint. The ratio will be 1 cup of chalk paint to a 1/4 cup of water. You will apply it just the same as you would if you didn’t water down the paint. Some tips on painting on metal:
-Don’t use a brush, unless you want brush strokes. I ended up using a foam craft brush and sort of blotted all over the piece.
-The metal seemed to absorb more of the paint than I feel wood normally does. Again, it didn’t require much paint so I had no issue going over it 2-3 times.
-The paint dries very very quickly, so this is a very fast makeover project.
-Once it has cured, it’s pretty hard to peel the paint off. I tried, because I wanted to know if it was a good way to paint metal. I tried to peel it off with my finger nail, but the paint didn’t budge. I did let it cure 2 weeks before testing. bunch of videos for you https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=DIY+painting+metal+with+chalk+paint

I’ve chalk painted right over metal lamp bases, doing nothing other than cleaning them well first, and they’re a few years old now and look great. I’d use a high quality chalk paint like those mentioned here’ already, I used Annie Sloan. Works really well.
Here are my examples-
