It will depend on the size of yard, what your location is (zone), and what you are wanting to do. If you want to have plants, trees, or decor. Can you post a few pictures and give us some ideas of what you would prefer the end results to be?
First decide what you like to do..weed, trim, mow etc. How much time you have to spare..what yards do you like to look at (google and save em). There are books on every gardener's skill level at thrift stores that can help, even interactive apps where you take a picture of your house and insert a bush, tree etc. When you have an idea of what you can handle and what you want then go to a nursery and ask questions "what foundation plants thrive here, which roses are best for this climate" etc. Tell them about you, ask if they could visit and make suggestions. You would be surprised what a nursery knows about your area and the soil. Each plant you purchase - read the directions, then google it. Before you plant it. for instance; one evergreen is planted differently then if you were planting a hedge or several next to each other. Plant directions are only for that plant not a row of em. Remenber: Before you dig have the electric and cable company or Miss Utility to show you where their wires are. Some of those are not very deep in the soil. Dont get yourself in a gardener's nightmare..only plant what you have time to take care of...and have fun!
This is what I did, for example:
