I used small three shelf bookcases to store toys and books, with larger things in bins beside it. You can utilize under bed boxes to store many things under the bed or on the floor of the closets. Shoe boxes or the plastic clear shoe boxes can store a lot of smaller things. I had a big bin for legs and one for finished sets if they wanted to leave them built for a while. Wire or metal shelving systems work really well for storing bins and some of them do look really nice. Just make sure you secure them so they don't tip when kids take things off the shelves, they sometimes are not very careful around such things. A cheap chest of drawers from somewhere like a garage sale or Salvation Army makes good storage in a closet for many things and doesn't have to be all for clothes.
