How do I clean old burned food from a white enamel gas stove top?

I moved into an old rent home & the stove was horrible. I've been here almost 4 years & have yet to get the top completely clean.

    Have you tried Magic Eraser?

    That's what I thought.

    Hi Betty,

I have had this problem too over the years and what I did was to make a paste of baking soda and water and apply it to the burned on areas, let it set, dampening as needed for at least 8 hours. To clean it off I used the rough side of a sponge (the scrubber side). I have also used Cream of Tartar the same way but that is a lot more expensive and had the same results. Another step up might be Bar Tender's friend, which is a mild abrasive, follow the directions on the container.

You could also give the Magic Eraser a try as suggested by Chloe and see if that helps you.

One thing I would really hesitate to try is a knife, that could scratch the white enamel.

I just did this! Orange oil spray is good but still requires scrubbing. I was outside doing the top of a used purchase gas range and needed a scrubber that would not scratch the enamel. I picked up a stick from the tree and used it to help get off the thick stuff. To my great surprise, it worked better than brillo and did not scratch the surface!

Cerama Bryte cleaner, which is used for glass stove tops, can also be used on enamel stove tops, kitchen sinks, stainless steel sinks, and Corningware. Try a little on the stains, let it sit for a while, then scrub carefully with a rag, sponge or paper towel. It's worth a try.

I use Bon Ami cleanser and an old toothbrush. My stovetop is about 10 years old and looks almost new.

spray some ammonia (not diluted) onto the stain. Cover with a plastic bag or plastic wrap. Let stand overnight so it soaks. Wipe with damp cloth in the morning and repeat process till the whole stain is gone. I also used Brillo towards the end to remove some of the food. I also used a plastic spatula for the home improvement store (not metal) to scrape off the food.
