Optimally, you want large drainage holes; an inch in diameter is a good place to start.

  • My boxes have holes on the bottom and I just used a nail and hammer to make a few holes. Let's the excess water out and soil stays in the container. I also line with coffee filters before adding soil.

  • Hi Megan, I think it depends on your container size, you want the holes large enough for the water to escape but not big enough for the rocks, gravel or dirt on the bottom of your container to run out when wet. I would place three holes in it if it's a large box, one at each end and one in the middle. Hope that helps!

If you put garden fabric over the holes you won't loose the soil out of the holes. If they are larger holes, put wire screening material over the holes, then the fabric over the screen. I do this with even my potted plants that have larger soils. It allows the holes for good drainage without loosing a lot of soil from watering. You want to make sure that you have enough drainage holes so that each area will drain and not hold too much water.

the bottom of the box - if it sits directly on the ground go a 1/2 to 1 inch.
