In our front yard we have flower garden and two small trees (which we don't know what they are...there when we bought the house)? We are planning to get rid of the trees to make it a full flower garden. However there are rocks and old weeds that keeps coming back (don't know what they had planted there before but there are tulips that comes up in the spring around the edge of the garden). What is the best way to get rid of the rocks (small-medium) and weeds to get ready for new flowers?

  • Dig out the weeds making sure to get the root. Sift the soil to get rid of the rocks. Consider giving the trees away to family, friends or neighbors.

Hi Karen! We just bought our home a year ago, and we had a huge garden area that was neglected for years. We had very huge thistles, rocks, and much more. The first thing we did was remove all the thistles which was a job!!! Then we removed the rocks using the wheelbarrow to carry them out. After that we tilled the area down. We had to till several times to get it the way we wanted it. Then put down some chemicals to try and hinder the weed growth. It is a lot of work but so worth it in the end. I have supplied some links for you to read. I wish you the best of luck.

When you say get rid of trees what do you mean? cut them off? dig up remove? Cutting them off does not get rid of them just cuts them off. They will continue to grow, probably more like bushes not upright trees. Rocks need to pick them up/roll them away & remove them;weeds pull them completely roots and all or spot spray with Round-Up.

Probably dig them up if someone wants them. Thanks for the help.

Unless the trees are a nuisance, or unattractive, find out what they are before you remove them. They may have a bloom period, or gorgeous fall color, that you might like.

I say this because I bought a house years ago, and many of the plantings looked pretty ordinary, until they had their bloom season.

Then, good luck with the garden. The only way I know to get rocks out is to put them in a wheelbarrow or garden cart and haul them to somewhere you can use them. Believe it or not, it's expensive to buy rocks when you want them! You'll probably also need to have the tree stumps ground down so you can dig freely in the area.

Take out the trees if you don't want them after you find out what they are. If you are clearing out the rest of the garden and not leaving anything in it, you can use something like roundup to get the ones that you can't pull or dig easily. Make sure that it is the type that has a short period before you can plant and make sure the weeds are all actually dead. Once you have the garden cleared and ready, plant your garden, then apply something like Preen Weed Preventer to keep any weed seeds that blow or make there way into the garden won't sprout. It doesn't work for grasses or weeds that spread by roots, like creeping charlie. Those are easy to keep at bay if you get to them when they are at the edge of the garden. Put down wood mulch to help conserve the moisture in the soil and fertilize according to the instructions you get with your fertilizer. Check up on the plants you are putting in to see if they need a fertilizer that may be specific to them.
