How do I paint lots of old wood frames for cluster on wall?

I Love the Antique look, especially Scandinavian as my Family is from Stavanger, Norway & my house is a old huge Victorian built 1883-85 in Idaho's Panhandle, with a Scandinavian touch- I have a lot of large old wood frames & would like them to match for Cluster on Living Rooms walls & near stairs - I don't care much for most of the photos in them but cannot toss them either! Maybe 2-birds-with-one-stone help?? I LOVE Norway everything!Thank you, Kristi

Paint them whatever color you desire. Take the old photos out and replace them with things that appeal to you.

Usually an antique look is achieved by doing a base coat of some color and then topping with another color that is wiped off while wet. The nooks and crannies will hold some of the top coat and the base shows through. I made a picture frame for an "old world" jigsaw puzzle. I used picture framing material, then stained the wood. The frame had carvings, so I highlighted the carvings with a fine-tip Sharpie pen to simulate old age and grime build-up.
If you must keep the pictures, consider having them copied into black and white or sepia. This will give them a more cohesive, designer look in your distressed and painted frames.
