How to re-floor my condo?

What is the most economical and sustainable way to replace the existing floor in my condo? It's currently laminate which has become worn and chipped over time and I don't want to do that again. The floor would include the kitchen bathroom and living areas but not the bedrooms.

They have some great tiles that look like wood available now. That might be an option?
Hi Harriet, Here is a link to other hometalkers who have painted theirs. It would be the most economical way to do it and if done right can last a long time. Look through them and you might find something you like.

Tile or vinyl would both work. Just depends where you live and how cold it gets. If you go with tile, just remember to seal the grout periodically for easy day to day cleaning. Unless you install in floor heating, can be very cold underfoot in winter, especially if it snows where you live. Vinyl planks or sheet vinyl is an option too. Takes a beating and very low maintenance. Or if budget allows, you can install hardwood. Not the best for kitchens and bathrooms in a humid climate. I have in our kitchen and powder room, but I am in zone 9 where it is hot and very dry most of the year.
