How to texture a wall?

I have a 30 plus year old home. I removed the original wallpaper as I now want to paint. The sheetrock needs to be texturized … is there a way I can do it as DIY'er and get close to professional results??? My painted walls in the rest of the house have a very light texture, similar to orange peel. Thank you.

Go to a good paint store and talk with them. You may be able to just use a textured primer or paint. Take a few pictures of the texture you want to mimic. Trying to actually use drywall mud is trickier than it looks, and might be worth paying someone who knows what you are doing.

I have tried a nice painting design on my son wall using tapes so I could use 2 different color and also different form and it looks pretty nice 2 years later. Could be also an idea for you

I did mine with a bucket of spackling using a 4 inch spackling blade. Just dip and smear in all directions. You can use a wet rag to dab on the wet spackling and pull towards you. You can use a car sponge, the kind with large crevices in it and it will give a soft texture. The blade gives an old world texture. Play with designs on a piece of scrap wood. It isn't hard at all.

You can purchase cheap dollar store tissue paper, separate the sheets and wad them up. In wad roll paint on the wall put tissue paper over paint and tool paint over the paper. It looks really awesome. Depending on the color it can look like stone, or slate etc.
