How do I choose the right color for my valances?

Here is my freshly painted living room. It is painted “classic Taupe” by Behr. I can’t have long curtains as my cat is a curtain climber. The valances are white. They don’t look right to me. What other color could I use? The paint is a real light brownish color.

you are a quilter! gorgeous hangings, etc. I suggest you find fabric or valances that match or are CLOSE TO the shade of your walls -- maybe dip what you have in hot tea or coffee water -- then they'll just disappear and your other art work/hangings will be your focuses. Good luck.

Hi Connie your very beautiful quilts dominate the space. I would make valances out of colorful fabric or patchwork to match the quilts in vibrancy. BTW don't the cat's climb the quilts? Actually I wouldn't worry about the white valances (I'm not a fan of any valances,) 'cause your space is such a knockout!

Ivory lace would look nice, along with tea/coffee dipping the large doily on your coffee table, to go with your vintage and rustic look :)

Well done!!! I agree with going for the wall color on the valances. You want the natural light to shine on those glorious quilts. (Y)

You are a quilter! Lots of hard work hanging on your walls! Beautiful work! I would use cream valances rather than white. Or I think that a wooden look woven roman blinds would look fantastic with your floor. You could mount them higher above your windows so that when you pulled them up to open they would not block the light from the windows. They could be as high as your quilt rods.

  • LOVE all your quilts! They are just beautiful! I have nothing to add, just wanted you to know how much I admire your handiwork! 💗

I agree with Gk, and would go with woven wood blinds. Your quilts are lovely.

You have so much going on in your room (in a good way) that I wouldn't use fabric valances. I would simplify your look by building a simple wooden valance and painting it the same color as your walls. Let your beautiful fabrics be what catches your eye. For your door, I would replace the curtain with vinyl cling that you simply cut to fit the glass and apply with water--so easy. These can be purchased at any home improvement store. I agree with others who suggested changing the valances to match the wall color. You could even do this by "painting" the current fabric (if it's cotton) and give the valance a bit more body. Beautiful quilts really make the room yours!
