Hi. Cleaning silver used to be my worst nightmare. Until I learned this method:

    1. Line a sink with heavy duty aluminum foil - shiny side up.
    2. Pour in hot water (I bring mine to almost boiling in a pan on the stove)
    3. Add ice cream salt - dissolve one cup of salt in warm water before pouring into hot water in sink
    4. Put silver in sink but do not crowd. If highly tarnished, leave in water for at least 15 minutes. It may take two times in the hot water/salt bath before the piece is completely free of tarnish.
    5. Rinse in cold water
    6. Finish with light coating of silver polish*, rinse again and buff to high shine.

*The polish will form a protective coating. The silver should stay beautiful for one month before another polishing is needed. If piece is in an enclosed case, it may be up to 3-6 months before a polishing is needed.

    Good luck!

Both methods from Ann and Bijous work well, either should work for you.
