I bought 3 cabinets from Ikea and built a frame to go on top of that from plywood, with edging to keep the mattress stable. One cabinet is at the base, and one on each side. I now have drawers under my bed, which is about 4' tall, with a small step stool on either side so I can get up on it. I've used it for years and love it.
