How to diamond tuft a curved wall?

I’m trying to upholster a curved wall along my staircase with tufts. It’s not a deep curve but I need a backing that has some flex to it. How thick should the foam be?

THickness of foam would be up to you depending how deep you want the tufts to be. I wouldn't use foam. Too soft, cushiony, and flexible. I would use layers of batting. Would.t compress as much, still soft, but gives better structure.
Beautiful, but may be very hard to keep clean.
If that picture with the ladders is your home, I think the rustic flooring would not go with tufting. The picture you show as what you want, shows a much more elegant look as opposed to your floor although it would go with your curved staircase.
Elizabeth Pullan. Batting is not lumpy. It's used for making quilts. Hometalkers use it on top of foam or by itself when upholstering cushions, cornices etc. It actually gives a smooth soft finish. I've never found it lumpy.
